The California federal judge overseeing Michael Avenatti’s wire fraud trial allowed a prosecutor Thursday to elicit unusual testimony about other investigations involving the celebrity lawyer, ruling that Avenatti’s cross-examination opened the door for it.

Jurors still won’t hear details of Avenatti’s pending 30-month sentence for extortion convictions in New York, or his upcoming trial there for wire fraud involving former client Stormy Daniels. But they heard through Assistant U.S. Attorney Brett Sagel’s redirect examination of Avenatti’s former paralegal, Judy Regnier, that some of her 18 meetings with government agents were about “another matter,” and California federal prosecutors weren’t the ones questioning her.
