Longtime Sullivan & Cromwell partner Michael Cooper, who held top leadership roles in the New York City Bar Association, the Legal Aid Society and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, died Monday at age 84. He died after a battle with COVID-19, according to a firmwide email.
Cooper joined Sullivan & Cromwell in 1961, held a partnership there from 1968 to 2003, and continued to practice as of counsel at the firm until the time of his death. He served as managing partner of the firm’s litigation group from 1978 to 1985.
