Attorneys representing the U.S. Department of Justice and advice columnist E. Jean Carroll are set to appear in person in Manhattan federal court Wednesday, as U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan weighs whether the federal government can be substituted for President Donald Trump as the defendant in a year-old defamation suit.

Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan of Kaplan Hecker & Fink, filed suit against Trump in Manhattan state court in November 2019, arguing that the president defamed Carroll as he publicly dismissed her allegation that he sexually assaulted her in New York City during the 1990s.
