After a former top doctor at Rikers Island filed a highly critical report about Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center’s response to the coronavirus, federal Bureau of Prisons officials sprung into action to take a surprise tour of their own, according to testimony Tuesday in the Eastern District of New York.

Homer Venters, an epidemiologist and former chief medical officer for the New York City Correctional Health Services, inspected the MDC on April 23 and described major failures in the facility’s symptom tracking and infection control capabilities in his April 30 report.
