Corey Stoughton, attorney-in-charge of the Legal Aid Society criminal defense practice’s special litigation unit, has been credited with the release of hundreds of people from New York City jails since March, as she filed one mass writ of habeas corpus after another on behalf of medically vulnerable inmates.
The dangers of COVID-19 at Rikers Island, where infection rates are notably higher than the rest of the city, became her near-exclusive focus in March, even as she adjusted to the same strange circumstances as professionals across the city.
