In a news release about the letters sent Monday to a Midtown Manhattan hardware store and an Astoria, Queens, grocery market, Attorney General Letitia James made clear to merchants statewide that she will go after price gougers who look to “prey on others’ anxiety” over the spreading virus in order to “line their own pockets,” and she issued broader warnings to the public about a range of potential coronavirus-driven schemes.

In response to the allegations of price gouging on the hand sanitizer, the owner of Scheman & Grant Hardware said Tuesday in a phone interview that while the AG’s Office “alleges an unconscionably excessive price, there is no relative price basis they can share with me by which they define excessive.”
“I only raised my price either pro rata or dollar for dollar based on increased cost from my supplier,” said Andrew Scheman, the owner.
