This week, we’re taking a look at the sometimes rocky transition for military lawyers who want to go into private practice.
You’ll hear from Law.com reporter Karen Sloan who talks with three attorneys about making the switch. Anne Savin spent 10 years as an Army JAG officer and is now an associate in Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe’s Supreme Court and appellate practice. Matthew Reeder was a Judge Advocate in the Marine Corps for more than six years before joining Orrick’s litigation practice as an associate. And Jaime Turner, now an in-house lawyer at Morgan Stanley, previously served an Army JAG for six years.
Part of the challenge for military lawyers who shift gears into civilian practice is that legal employers don’t necessarily understand how their prior experience, which can be vast, translates to civilian law. Easing that transition is the goal of the Veterans’ Legal Career Fair on Oct. 25 in Washington, D.C., hosted by Orrick and is now in its fifth year.
