Reports Friday that Michael Cohen had surreptitiously recorded a conversation with President Donald Trump about potentially paying the parent company of the National Enquirer for former Playboy model Karen McDougal’s story of an affair with Trump reignited speculation over what federal prosecutors in the office of the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York could be digging into.

According to a number of former prosecutors who spoke with the New York Law Journal, the tape would appear to bear on possible campaign finance violations that federal investigators are reportedly looking into, depending on what was discussed.
