A Bronx judge on Thursday acquitted a New York City police sergeant of murder and other charges in the 2016 shooting death of a mentally ill woman who picked up a bat when police entered her apartment.

Following a bench trial, acting Bronx Supreme Court Justice Robert Neary also acquitted Police Sgt. Hugh Barry of charges of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the shooting of 66-year-old Deborah Danner, who was suffering from a psychotic episode when police arrived.
