New leadership is on the horizon at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Trump has nominated Irell & Manella managing partner Andrei Iancu following the June resignation of Michelle Lee. The 49-year-old Iancu is an accomplished IP litigator in district court and at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Assuming he’s confirmed, Iancu will likely confront a host of issues related to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Lee was already exploring changes to the board’s inter partes review procedures, and the Supreme Court is weighing two cases that could force changes on them, or kill them altogether.
