Managing partner Joe Dilg says the firm felt it needed to compensate its attorneys based on national trends, and not just the local Texas market. The last time large Texas firms made a salary jump was back in 2000.Ex-Federal Prosecutor Joins Allen & Overy's N.Y. Office

As part of its plans to become a 1,000-attorney firm, Duane Morris is acquiring a new 82,000-square-foot space in Times Square. Chairman Sheldon Bonovitz says he would like to add at least 20 attorneys in New York, mainly through group hires, before the firm moves into the new space in March or April. Boston-based Nixon Peabody has bumped pay for first-year associates in its Washington, D.C., office to $160,000. The move is costly for a firm like Nixon Peabody, which has profits per partner of only $585,000. Industry consultants frequently warn that any firm with profits per partner at $1 million or less struggles with the $160,000 starting pay grade. "It's the firms in Washington, our competitors, that put the pressure on us to make a move," says Laurin Mills, managing partner of the D.C. office.View more book results for the query "*"
