In another major blow to the regulation of money in elections, a sharply divided U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down federal limits on the total amounts individuals may contribute to candidates and political committees.

“An aggregate limit on how many candidates and committees an individual may support through contributions is not a ‘modest restraint’ at all” on protected political speech, Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. wrote for the 5-4 conservative majority. “The government may no more restrict how many candidates or causes a donor may support than it may tell a newspaper how many candidates it may endorse.”
