The Trump administration’s pick for general counsel at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Matthew Leopold, who is of counsel at Carlton Fields Jorden Burt in Tallahassee, Florida, reported nearly $300,000 in income from the firm since the beginning of 2016 through the end of May, recently released White House financial disclosure forms reveal.
Although Leopold’s reported income is not anywhere near as eye-popping as the multimillions reported by some other Big Law nominees who were firm partners tapped by the administration, it is not unusual for someone who has spent much of his legal career in the public sector. Leopold was an attorney in the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice for more than six years and then general counsel at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection before joining Carlton Fields in 2015, according to his LinkedIn profile.
