As President-elect Donald Trump’s supporters and critics prepare to descend on Washington, D.C., for his inauguration, a panel of federal appeals judges on Monday considered the constitutionality of restrictions on where protesters can gather during the festivities.

The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit looked past January, though. They mused about whether a win for protesters seeking access to spots along the inauguration parade route would open the door to First Amendment challenges to how the government handles other big events on the National Mall, such as the Fourth of July.
