Almost a decade after the start of the Great Recession, law firms still haven’t regained the go-go years’ growth rates. The country’s 350 largest law firms barely stayed even in size in 2015, a comprehensive National Law Journal survey of attorney head count at 500 firms found.

This year, the NLJ looked at the numbers for the largest 350 firms by head count, as it has in past years. We also collected data from and ranked into two tiers an additional 150 law firms to publish the first ever NLJ 500 list. The NLJ 500 creates a fuller portrait of Big Law today, including midtier and on-the-cusp-of-Big-Law firms down to about 70 lawyers total.
