In a trial against Apple Inc., Irell put on seven experts who addressed damages in a case over chip designs in iPhones and iPads that the licensing arm of the University of Wisconsin-Madison claimed infringed on its patents. “We wanted to construct a damages case that would meet the toughest scrutiny by a district judge or an appellate court in terms of where damages law might be in the future,” said rainmaker Morgan Chu.
