When it comes to whistleblowers, Phillips & Cohen dispenses more than legal advice. Robert Baker, who brought his case in 2005, found being a whistleblower “emotionally draining,” but Phillips & Cohen partner Peter Chatfield “always protected not just my interest from a financial point of view but my well-being,” he said.

Baker’s case, joined in part by the U.S. Justice Department, reached a final settlement on Feb. 2, 2015. Community Health Systems Inc. agreed to pay $75 million to resolve allegations that several of its New Mexico hospitals were making illegal donations to county governments to fund the state’s share of Medicaid payments to hospitals. Baker received more than $18 million.
