Barnes & Thornburg partner Vincent “Trace” Schmeltz III must donate $5,000 as punishment for tweeting photographs of a trial in violation of court rules, a committee of federal judges in Chicago has ruled.

The sanction is stiffer than the $1,000 donation that Schmeltz proposed to the court earlier this month. The court’s executive committee said in its Dec. 10 order that “financial and remedial sanctions are necessary and appropriate” because Schmeltz’s tweets were “economically motivated.”
