Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens criticized Major League Baseball’s antitrust exemption in a speech last week that came as the high court prepares to review a challenge to the immunity.
“It simply makes no sense to treat organized baseball differently from other professional sports under the antitrust laws,” Stevens said on May 15 in a talk before the Sports Lawyers Association in Baltimore. The 95-year-old Stevens also recalled his own precourt involvement as a lawyer in antitrust and baseball matters.
