A retired California Supreme Court judge is fighting a subpoena that would force him to explain how he calculated payments to dozens of women who claim their former attorneys at Girardi Keese cheated them out of settlement funds.

The women, who in 2011 settled lawsuits alleging they got breast cancer after taking Prempro, are demanding that retired California Supreme Court Justice Edward Panelli and JAMS, the arbitration firm where he has worked as a neutral since 1994, provide a deposition as part of a lawsuit the women filed last year against Girardi Keese and two of its partners, Thomas Girardi and James O’Callahan.
