Setting up a clash between state and federal courts in Alabama, same-sex marriage advocates are fighting in federal district court to force a county judge to issue marriage licenses.

Don Davis, probate judge of Mobile County, Ala., on Monday closed the marriage license office there until further notice. Davis cited “conflicting orders” from U.S. District Judge Callie V.S. Granade, who declared the state’s same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional, and Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore (left), who ordered probate judges not to issue licenses to same-sex couples.
