In its first foray into Northern California, Steptoe & Johnson LLP next week will open a new office in Silicon Valley, poaching two IP partners from King & Spalding to lead the Palo Alto outpost.
It will be the 410-lawyer firm’s tenth office, to be headed by well-known patent litigator William Abrams, who joins along with partner Sanjeet Dutta. Steptoe also added a third King & Spalding IP partner, Boyd Cloern, in Washington.
“While Steptoe has long had clients in Silicon Valley, putting down roots there has been an important priority of the firm,” said Philip West, chair of Steptoe, in a news release.
Steptoe is among the last large firms in Washington to make the move to California. Of the top 20, multi-city law offices in Washington, only Patton Boggs also lacks a Northern California presence. (Williams & Connolly and Wiley Rein are also without outposts, but both have no offices at all outside the Washington area.)
