THEN: Arline Laurer had a better idea than most new law students about the realities of practicing law, having interned in a district attorney’s office and worked as a paralegal. She knew the job market was shrinking. “I’m obviously about to take on a lot of debt. I’m hoping by the time I get out of law school the job climate will be better,” she said at the time.

NOW: Laurer needed a moment to collect her thoughts when asked whether she was glad she went to law school. Laurer, now 25, said the experience opened her eyes to new ideas and gave her newfound confidence. But she hasn’t found a job yet, and the long wait for her results from the July administration of the New York state bar exam have left her feeling uncertain.
