If you’re following the results of the NLJ 350, you already know which firms gained and lost the most attorneys in 2012. But there’s another perspective on highs and lows, involving the firms’ rankings year over year.

For example, the biggest mover was Goldberg Segalla, the Buffalo, N.Y.-based firm that climbed 67 spots to No. 249 on this year’s NLJ 350 from No. 316 last year. That represented a growth rate of 27.2 percent — 34 by headcount — mainly in the New York office that it opened last year.

The second biggest mover was Miller & Martin, which dropped 66 spots to No. 302 this year from No. 236. It topped the list of firms that decreased the most by percentage, with a 21.3 percent decline, but it wasn’t among the 10 firms that lost the most attorneys by headcount.

A big reason for Miller & Martin’s decrease was the departure of about 35 attorneys from its Nashville office for Butler, Snow, O’Mara, Stevens & Cannada.

It’s clear that the smaller the firm, the greater the impact attorney additions or departures can have in its ranking. Rivkin Radler, with 129 lawyers, decreased by 10 attorneys but plunged 30 spots from No. 287 to No. 317.

Shifts were less dramatic among the top 25 law firms. The biggest position-changer was Bryan Cave, which rose six spots, to No. 23 from No. 29 last year. The firm added 106 attorneys, an 11.9 percentgain. "Bryan Cave’s growth in 2012 was driven primarily by the combination with Holme Roberts & Owen [of Denver] and the addition of strong laterals inseveral offices and key practice areas," firm chairman Don Lents said.

Of the firms in the top 10, only No. 1 and No. 2 switched places. DLA Piper, with 4,036 attorneys, went to the top of the list, edging out Baker & McKenzie with 4,004 lawyers.

Here’s a look at some of the firms that moved among the ranks of this year’s NLJ 350.
