Tax factor

Ready or not, Lauryn Hill has two weeks to pay three years’ worth of taxes. Last year the singer pleaded guilty to failing to pay federal taxes on $1.8 million earned between 2005 and 2007. The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., reports that, during a hearing last week, Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra Moser told the court that Hill would receive $1 million for recording five new songs for Sony. U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo agreed to postpone sentencing until May 6, but not before chiding, "This is not someone who stands before the court penniless.…Actions speak louder than words." — Richard Binder
