The retired partner at Arnold & Porter still reports for work most days, and says he is glad to be "yanked out of the closet" to recall the Gideon v. Wainwright case at commemorative events like those taking place on this, the 50th anniversary of the landmark decision guaranteeing legal representation to indigent defendants in criminal cases.
