As Washington state Governor Jay Inslee reported fresh leaks, federal officials announced plans to remove 3.1 million gallons of radioactive waste from underground tanks at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Hundreds of lawsuits alleging that radiation releases caused cancer and other illnesses have languished for more than two decades.

DEFENDANT WAS SHACKLED

Stringently applying recent U.S. Supreme Court precedents, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reinstated a 33-year-old death judgment on March 7, ruling that a killer was not necessarily prejudiced by being forced to wear a visible shackle at trial. The court said that any prejudice to Marvin Pete Walker "was trivial in relation to the magnitude of his crimes."
