A federal judge on January 29 upheld a $1.05 billion jury verdict in favor of Apple Inc. and rejected Samsung Electronics Co.’s request for a new trial. However, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh reversed the jury’s finding of willful infringement of Apple’s smartphone design.

The nation’s largest law firms last year on average enjoyed a 5 percent increase in gross revenues the biggest year-over-year jump since 2008, according to a survey by Wells Fargo Private Bank’s Legal Specialty Group. Based on results from more than 100 firms, Wells said, net income rose an average of 6 percent compared with 2011 and profits per equity partner by 5 percent.
