A federal judge on January 29 upheld a $1.05 billion jury verdict in favor of Apple Inc. and rejected Samsung Electronics Co.’s request for a new trial. However, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh reversed the jury’s finding of willful infringement of Apple’s smartphone design.

BIG FIRMS MAKE MONEY

The nation’s largest law firms last year on average enjoyed a 5 percent increase in gross revenues — the biggest year-over-year jump since 2008, according to a survey by Wells Fargo Private Bank’s Legal Specialty Group. Based on results from more than 100 firms, Wells said, net income rose an average of 6 percent compared with 2011 and profits per equity partner by 5 percent.
