Rougeau, who has taught contracts, real estate law and Catholic social thought at Notre Dame for 12 years, will step into a role vacated by John Garvey last summer. Garvey is now the president of Catholic University of America.

Rougeau, who on July 1 will become the school’s first black dean, said he was attracted to the job by Boston College’s mission to advance social justice — a topic, he said, that is near to his heart. He also wanted to remain at a religiously affiliated school. Both Notre Dame and Boston College are affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.
