For DLA Piper, getting a subpoena or two in the steroids investigation was probably unavoidable. Last month, defense lawyers for Roger Clemens, charged with lying about his use of performance-enhancing drugs, served subpoenas on the firm and on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Former DLA Piper Chairman George Mitchell was the author of the December 2007 report on steroids and performance-enhancing drugs in the big leagues, and Clemens’ lawyers want information from the firm about Mitchell’s report.

The firm’s Washington managing partner, Frank “Rusty” Conner III, declined to comment. DLA Piper partner Charles Scheeler in Baltimore, who practices in the internal investigations and white-collar criminal defense practice, could not be reached for comment. From the House oversight committee, Clemens’ attorneys, including Russell Hardin Jr. of Houston and Cooley partner Michael Attanasio of San Diego, are asking for documents that include interview notes and memos related to the February 2008 hearing on players’ use of steroids.
