The U.S. Senate is full of lawyers, but none quite like Mike Lee. Like no other senator in recent memory, the new Republican from Utah arrived in Washington last month with deep connections to the legal community in D.C. and beyond, and even with the U.S. Supreme Court.

Lee, 39, clerked for Justice Samuel Alito Jr. a mere five years ago, after clerking for him as an appeals court judge years earlier; Lee and fellow newcomer Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut are believed to be the first former high court clerks ever to become senators.
