The U.S. Supreme Court is once again at a pivotal moment as it decides how to handle former President Donald Trump’s quest for immunity from prosecution over his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Special Counsel Jack Smith wants Trump to stand trial as quickly as possible over his conduct in the weeks after President Joe Biden’s election victory and before Trump left office, actions the ex-war crimes prosecutor alleges constituted fraud against the United States and other crimes. Trump’s lawyers, however, have sought delays as they try to get the case tossed on the ground that Trump’s behavior was covered by presidential immunity.
