The Federal Trade Commission has prohibited the maker of TurboTax tax filing software from advertising any “free” services or products unless it is truly free for all consumers or the company provides clear disclosures that the offer is limited, an action the FTC said should serve as a warning to businesses that falsely market their offerings.

The FTC’s order accompanies its opinion that Intuit Inc. deceived consumers by advertising as “free” tax products and services that most consumers were ineligible for.
