The U.S. Supreme Court said Friday that the Biden administration overstepped its authority with its plan to forgive nearly half a trillion dollars in federal student loans, delivering a fatal blow to one of the president’s most ambitious, yet polarizing, agenda items.

In a 6-3 ruling, the court said the education secretary lacks the power under a Sept. 11-era law to cancel federal student loan debt for up to more than 40 million Americans. The three liberal justices dissented.
