A meeting of the Judicial Conference of the United States asked Congress for dozens of new judges across district and circuit courts Tuesday.
“There hasn’t been a new judiciary bill to add judgeships for about 30 years,” said Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals Chief Circuit Judge Lavenski Smith at a press event announcing the results of Tuesday’s meeting. He said requirements at the trial level have increased in different areas and, based on weighted case averages, more judges were needed to provide “the best access for efficient justice across the country.”
