McDermott Will & Emery and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher have pulled off a rare feat: the completion of a deal involving the sale of a storied rum brand from Venezuela, a country that has been a no-go zone for merger and acquisition transactions for more than a decade.

McDermott represented the Diplomático rum brand in its pre-transaction structuring in the U.S. and Europe and its eventual sale to U.S. wine and spirits company Brown‑Forman Corp., the maker of Jack Daniel’s whiskey, for $725 million.
