The arrest of a California man who allegedly attempted to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh has once again shown a light on the need to better protect members of the judiciary.

Judge John E. Jones III, who served in the Middle District of Pennsylvania for 20 years, has been following issues of judicial security since before the recent headlines. His own history of death threats following controversial court decisions led Chief Justice John Roberts to appoint him to the Judicial Conference’s Judicial Security Committee where he spent about a half a dozen years helping craft policy recommendations before retiring from the bench in 2021.
