The U.S. Senate on Wednesday confirmed two judicial nominees to district courts in California, including the first Native American to serve as a federal judge in the state.

Sunshine Sykes, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was confirmed to the U.S. District Court for California’s Central District on a 51-45 vote. Sykes is a judge on the Riverside County Superior Court, where she has served since her 2013 appointment by Gov. Jerry Brown.
