Surrounded by family and dignitaries at a Sacramento ceremony, Patricia Guerrero on Monday was sworn in as an associate justice on the California Supreme Court, making her the first Latina in state history to hold that title.

The grandchild of Mexican immigrants and the daughter of a cowboy and a neighborhood caretaker, Guerrero told a gathering at the Leland Stanford Mansion that she credited “the courage, the sacrifices and the struggles of my parents and my grandparents” for her success.
