Nearly a year after a Texas jury handed down a $2.175 billion patent infringement verdict against Intel Corp., the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has agreed to review one of the patents undergirding it.

The PTO’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) launched trial proceedings Dec. 23 in OpenSky Industries LLC’s challenge to VLSI Technologies LLC’s 7,725,759 patent. Jurors in U.S. District Judge Alan Albright’s Western District of Texas courtroom awarded $675 million for infringement of the patent March 1. The patent discloses a system for managing clock speed in an electronic device.
