A federal judge in Wisconsin denied an effort to grant sanctions against former President Donald Trump over a 2020 election challenge, finding he lacked jurisdiction to award attorney fees in the case.

U.S. District Judge Brett Ludwig, who was appointed by Trump to the bench, said in a 10-page ruling that the former president “may have had far from noble intentions in filing this lawsuit.” However, he found that under precedent set by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the requests for attorney fees came too late for him to be able to grant them.
