Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday defended his Justice Department’s recent backing of stances in controversial litigation inherited from the Trump administration, saying he is seeking to “treat like cases alike.”

Sen. Patrick Leahy raised the recent moves by the Biden DOJ during an appropriations hearing Wednesday, pointing to government lawyers backing an effort to have the Justice Department defend former President Donald Trump in a defamation lawsuit from writer E. Jean Carroll, as well as looking to block the release of a legal memo pertaining to the Mueller report.
