What began as a joke back in January—albeit a biting one—morphed into real-world drama for one Stanford law student who found himself in the crosshairs of the school’s Federalist Society chapter and under a campus investigation mere days before he was set to graduate.
Stanford University announced late Wednesday that 3L Nicholas Wallace will be allowed to graduate on June 12 and that it had ended its investigation into his creation of a satirical flyer for a fake Federalist Society event that rankled some members of the real campus group. After receiving a formal complaint from a fellow law student, the university’s lawyers reviewed the emailed flyer created by Wallace on Jan. 25 and posted to a law school discussion and commentary listserv and concluded that it is protected speech, according to a statement from Stanford senior director of media relations E.J. Miranda.
