A panel of legal experts tangled over the religious liberty policies implemented under President Donald Trump, as two of them pushed back against a former political appointee’s assertion that Trump was “the most pro-religious freedom president.”

Roger Severino, director of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights during the Trump administration, made the claim during his opening remarks at a panel hosted by the Federalist Society on Wednesday, pointing to executive orders issued by Trump on religious liberty and other actions taken by the administration. However, Dan Mach, director of the ACLU’s Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief, and Clinton & Reed partner Greg Lipper rejected that narrative.
