A federal judge in Washington, D.C., agreed to release a Capitol riot defendant ahead of trial but stressed he would return to jail if he violated any conditions of his release—even if he did so at the direction of God.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the District of Columbia during a hearing Thursday repeatedly said the political and religious beliefs of Joshua Black, charged with breaching the U.S. Capitol building, were not before her and would not play into her decision on whether Black would be released pending trial. However, whether Black would comply with Jackson’s ruling was clearly at the forefront of the judge’s mind.
