A federal magistrate judge on Tuesday ordered Trump appointee Federico Klein, charged in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, to be detained pending trial, saying Klein “switched sides” after previously swearing to defend the Constitution.

Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui said he was concerned by Klein, who worked as a political appointee at the State Department under the prior administration. Faruqui said Klein’s work in the federal government and his prior military service made his conduct at the Capitol even more troubling.
