The Senate is poised to hold its second impeachment trial for President Donald Trump—but he will likely no longer be president once the proceedings begin.
The swift and bipartisan impeachment of Trump in the House took place with only a week left in his term, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he doesn’t believe Trump would get a fair trial before Inauguration Day. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has yet to formally transmit the single article of impeachment to the Senate, which would launch the proceedings.
