For the second time in two days, President Donald Trump granted clemency to a broad slate of political allies, issuing full pardons to his longtime adviser Roger Stone and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, in remarkable but anticipated reprieves that effectively wiped away convictions won by the special counsel team.

Trump’s pardon of Stone, 68, came months after he commuted the provocateur’s more than three-year sentence on charges he obstructed a congressional investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and intimidated a witness. In a statement, the White House cited Stone’s age and alleged “prosecutorial misconduct” by former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team as justifying the pardon, saying Stone was “treated very unfairly.”
