The 11th-hour lawyering to overturn the presidential election results to benefit President Donald Trump raises ethical issues for the legal profession, but it would be counterproductive to seek attorney sanctions, said Sidley Austin partner Carter Phillips, a Republican veteran U.S. Supreme Court advocate and former assistant to the solicitor general.

“The problem is you just want this to end and to move on. It doesn’t help it to end if you start filing [frivolous litigation] motions and trying to sanction the other side,” Phillips said. “It turns up the volume and gives more reason for rancor.”
