President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court spurred a tsunami of comments within the legal profession, presaging what likely will be a contentious confirmation fight.
Barrett, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, was officially nominated Saturday to fill a seat left vacant by the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Barrett’s selection, with nearly a month left until the presidential election, is sure to lead to a testy Senate confirmation hearing since she would cement a 6-3 Republican-appointed majority.
